Surveillance Cameras For Outdoor Conditions
Depending on where you live, you will most likely have to protect your camera from the elements
if you need to monitor an outdoor area. If you own a camera
already but want to utilize it for outdoor use, you will need to
purchase a special enclosure, or housing, for it. Camera enclosures
come in countless shapes and sizes, it is best to choose one based on
the shape of your camera, and the climate in which you live. For
example, many camera enclosures come equipped with a heater and blower,
to maintain proper operating temperature for the camera during the
winter months.
If you're starting from scratch, you may want a unit that combines the camera and housing in one package.
These also come in countless shapes, sizes, and capabilties. If
you want a camera for the long term, however, choose an outdoor camera
with built in climate control, auto iris, varifocal lense (3.0-8mm),
and infrared illuminator.
Many of these camera units are vandal resistant, but you should also be
installing your camera out of reach of any intruders.
A great all purpose outdoor camera is the EH150 from
Everfocus. It's high res (520TVL), 3-5.8mm Varifocal Lense, Auto
Iris, Low Lux (operates in low light conditions), vandal resistant, and
all-weather proof. You can usually find one at a cost of anywhere
from $100-$150 USD, and we highly recommend it. You may want to
have the camera professionally installed, though.

Wireless Cameras For Outdoor Use
To use a surveillance camera outdoors without having to run hard wiring, there are numerous wireless receiver and transmitter packages
available. We cannot recommend these for home use, as these units
are notoriously unreliable. Even some of the high end models used
in commercial and industrial applications are prone to interference
from a number of factors, including power lines. And these high
end units start at $1500 U.S.! If you're serious about an outdoor camera system for your home, we recommend that you go with a quality brand name camera and enclosure, and have it professionally installed.
