Home Security For Doors And Locks:
"Most
doors are a joke," wrote Jack MacLean in his book "Secrets of a
Superthief." "They can be kicked in easily, or at least have a
foot poked through them to make a hole that can be enlarged
quickly. Forget about hollow doors. Forget about most
wooden doors, unless they are solid and thick enough to resist an axe."
Maclean's
assertion is an accurate one, as most home security experts would
agree. An issue that crops up regularly with many break-ins is
the weakness of outside doors and their frames. Since practically
two-thirds of all illegal entries are made through doors, with the
remainder made by climbing through windows, these access points deserve
your first and most systematic security review.
Even burglars who eventually get into a house through a window will
generally have tried a door first, since they are less likely to draw
the suspicion of neighbors and nearby pedestrians. Obviously,
doors are designed to offer quick and convenient entry. For
security purposes, however, the trick is to build, equip, and reinforce
them so that they offer this convenience only to the people who
are actually authorized to enter and exit your home.
